Shrewsbury Flaxmill
Shrewsbury Flaxmill
JRA Fire Safety Advisors were appointed by Historic England to undertake a comprehensive fire risk assessment alongside a detailed fire door survey at Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings, widely recognised as the world’s first iron-framed building and a site of exceptional international significance in the history of construction and fire safety engineering.
The fire risk assessment undertaken by JRA Fire Safety Advisors was carefully structured to reflect the unique character, scale, and complexity of the site. The assessment considered the building’s pioneering iron frame construction, extensive floor plates, varied occupancy uses, and its role as a publicly accessible heritage asset, ensuring that life safety objectives were addressed while respecting the historic fabric and conservation principles that underpin the site’s management.
In parallel, JRA Fire Safety Advisors completed a detailed fire door survey across the premises, inspecting doors forming part of compartmentation, protected routes, and fire-resisting enclosures. Each door was individually assessed and recorded, producing a comprehensive asset register supported by photographic evidence and clear classifications to assist Historic England in managing fire safety within a building of exceptional heritage value.
This project demonstrates JRA Fire Safety Advisors’ capability to deliver robust, proportionate fire safety assessments within world-class heritage environments. Our work at Shrewsbury Flaxmill reflects an ability to balance regulatory compliance and life safety with the sensitive stewardship of historically significant buildings that have shaped modern fire-resistant design.
