JRA Fire Safety Advisors were commissioned to undertake a comprehensive fire compartmentation and passive fire protection survey at Ardenleigh Hospital, Erdington, Birmingham, a specialist secure mental health and forensic healthcare facility operated by Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. The commission required a detailed and structured assessment of fire-resisting construction throughout the premises to support the hospital’s life safety strategy, operational resilience, and ongoing statutory compliance within a highly sensitive healthcare environment.
Ardenleigh is a complex specialist mental health facility providing secure inpatient accommodation and 24-hour care for vulnerable service users, including forensic and adolescent mental health services, within a purpose-designed secure healthcare setting. As such, the building’s fire safety strategy relies heavily upon robust compartmentation and passive fire protection measures to support progressive horizontal evacuation principles, protect vulnerable occupants, and maintain continuity of care during emergency situations.
The scope of works delivered by JRA Fire Safety Advisors included a detailed review of fire compartment walls, compartment floors, protected shafts, ceiling voids, service risers, fire-stopping arrangements, and passive fire protection interfaces throughout the hospital estate. The survey was undertaken in accordance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, HTM 05 fire safety guidance, and relevant healthcare fire engineering principles, providing a clear understanding of how the existing fire-resisting construction supports the hospital’s evacuation and containment strategy.
Recognising the complexity and operational sensitivity of the environment, JRA adopted a methodical and proportionate inspection approach designed to minimise disruption to clinical operations whilst maintaining the robustness and detail required for a technically defensible assessment. All findings were captured within a comprehensive technical report supported by annotated plans, photographic evidence, and prioritised schedules of remedial works to assist the Trust in managing fire safety risk and planning future investment.
This project demonstrates JRA Fire Safety Advisors’ expertise in delivering specialist passive fire protection and compartmentation surveys within secure healthcare environments, where occupant vulnerability, progressive evacuation strategies, and operational continuity demand the highest levels of technical competence, discretion, and professional judgement.
